We hope everyone had a fabulous time at our auction last month! It was such a success thanks to everyone that participated in so many different ways. Your support is what enables our PTA to be one of a kind in how we support our students and teachers. A special thanks goes to our Auction Co-Chairs, Laura Maybaum and Victoria Savich that lead the way with passion and many long nights of hard work! We raised approximately $50,000!
As we look toward spring, there are so many fun things headed our way. Please check out the calendar of upcoming important dates. Enjoy this sunshine filled weekend!

T-Birds Serve Event
What: Something to Eat - Cone Zone Party
When: Saturday, March 28, 9:30 - 11:30am
T-Birds Serve is excited to bring this event back for a hands-on community service activity to help fight local hunger! Whether you are 3 years old or 90+ years old, there is something you can do. You will stand shoulder to shoulder with your group and pour cups of rice, soy, vegetables, vitamins, and cheese into a bag and then weigh, seal, and box each bag as together we dream of each box going down the street to the local food pantry. Each meal you package will help the 1 in 5 children that struggle with food insecurity. Are you unsure of what being food insecure means? Don’t worry we will have an educational time where you can learn about this and other facts about hunger and poverty!
This is a great event for the entire family to serve together. Join us for what is sure to be a FUN morning that will spark great conversation!
MINIMUM DONATION OF $35 PER FAMILY (UP TO 4 PEOPLE) paid directly to Something to Eat. Please register by March 23.
If you have any questions or want to support T-Birds Serve in a bigger way, please contact Karen Badgett at 913-269-9342 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Would your kiddos enjoy a brand new rock climbing wall in the gym? Let’s help make Mrs. Zink’s dream of installing a traverse rock climbing wall a reality! There are many ways that you can help us to do just that!
While the Shawnee Mission School District is struggling to fund all our priorities, anti-education legislators in Topeka are trying to further reduce funding to our schools. Please take note of a few bills currently pending at the state capitol.BILLS REDUCING PUBLIC EDUCATION FUNDING
There are four “voucher” type bills (HB2465, HB2552, HB2724, and HB2725) in the Kansas House that will allow for the diversion of tax dollars from our public schools that serve to educate all Kansas children, to private schools that are not required to meet the same inclusionary standards. To support our students and teachers, we need to ensure public tax dollars stay with public schools and that we maintain the level of funding that was finally provided for during the 2019 legislative session. To get a better understanding of the reasons public education advocates oppose these bills, you can read Kansas PTA’s testimony and SMSD’s testimony opposing HB2465, and Game on for Kansas Schools’ testimony in opposition of HB2552. HB2724 and HB2725 are the other two bills and are also opposed by public education advocacy groups.
SB271 - BILL TO MAINTAIN CURRENT FUNDING
The current school finance formula provides extra funds for schools with high numbers of at-risk students. This "high density at-risk funding" is set to expire (sunset) this year. If the funding sunsets, SMSD will lose $1 million annually.
SB271 was introduced to permanently repeal the sunset of the high density at-risk funding (i.e. continue current funding). This bill passed out of committee but was amended to delay the sunset by three years, instead of repealing. While a complete repeal would have been preferred, we should encourage senators to pass this bill to ensure our districts maintain this important funding piece for now.
MEDICAID EXPANSION UPDATE
Expanding Medicaid will increase health care access for a significant number of families in our SMSD community. Unfortunately, despite a bipartisan compromise, Senate President Susan Wagle is preventing the Medicaid Expansion bill from being considered.
STATE ELECTIONS MATTER
STATE ELECTIONS MATTER! In 2020, every state senate and house seat is on the ballot! Be sure to investigate candidates' records when it comes to supporting public schools.

Thanks to all of you, our final fundraising totals will be just over $50,000!
