Fall is here! Things are in full swing this month at Trailwood. So many fun events to look forward to and participate in. Get your tickets for the Trailwood Night at KC Current, it's going to be a blast! Make plans to join us for our next PTA meeting on October 10th at 8:15 am., and don't miss out on the Halloween Parade and Parties fun at the end of the month.

Our amazing PTA is only successful because we have so many wonderful volunteers! Thank you to Catie Ebert for chairing our awesome Donuts with Grownups event. Megan Foreman and Rebecca Keunen planned and hosted our super fun T-Bird Trot! Thank you ladies! We are so thankful that Liz Monahan along with our other volunteers, made our Trailwood booth at Kidfest a lot of fun for all of the students. Our Teacher Appreciation Committee has been working hard too! Thanks to Paula Wheeler and Lori Tritsch for taking such good care of our Trailwood teachers and staff. So many others working behind the scenes keep our PTA going strong. 

If you would like to be involved by chairing an event, we would love to have your help! These are our open committees for this school year.

Halloween will be our first opportunity for classroom parties this year. Classroom teachers are responsible for knowing their students’ food allergies and can make the best decisions on party foods that are safe for their class. To assist teachers with this responsibility, we ask that you submit food ingredient labels at least two school days in advance of classroom parties. For example, with Halloween parties on Tuesday, Oct. 31st, we ask you to submit ingredient labels by Friday, Oct. 27th. Any food that is not approved in advance by the teacher will be sent home with the student.  

Below is general guidance for classroom parties:                                                                             

- we encourage fruits and vegetables as much as possible                                                                                  

- soda and energy drinks are not allowed         

- any non-fruit or vegetable food that is brought in must be prepackaged and include an ingredient label (no homemade goods)                          

- classroom teachers need at least two days notice to review ingredient labels before party days

We recently celebrated several valued staff members at Trailwood. Monday, September 25th was Food Service Appreciation Day in which the PTA brought breakfast for our cafeteria manager,  Ms. Jennifer Willer and cafeteria assistant, Ms. Patricia Morrison. Monday, October 2nd was Custodian’s Day and we celebrated Head custodian, Mr. Robert Lee with lunch and our two night custodians, Mr. Bryan Zawada and Ms. Karla Levia with dinner. Thank you to these well-deserving and amazing staff members!  

 The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee is looking forward to helping our Trailwood families celebrate their differences and provide some support where needed. Here are few ideas to explore this month:

 * Read Across SMSD - Shawnee Mission School District is a great way to celebrate diversity. Take some time to check out the link provided for monthly theme books that will help our community to get more connected. 

 *Hispanic Heritage Month began on September 15 - October 15th, there is a flyer attached with great information on how to celebrate in Kansas City. 

* October also marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month- There is a global effort to raise awareness this month and to support those affects by this disease.

Please consider taking a half-day or full-day out of your busy schedules and spending some time at Trailwood as a Wingman! This is a great opportunity to interact with the kids and see what they do every day. Your schedule will vary depending on the needs of the day, but you can plan on spending most of your day with your kiddo(s) in the classroom, on the playground or at specials.
