April is here and the “race to the finish” for the 2018-2019 school year is on! After a busy year, April is a month filled with days of appreciation for all our wonderful staff at Trailwood. Here are the days that we will be showing our gratitude for various staff members—please be sure and let them know what a wonderful job they do to make Trailwood such a great place for kids!
Though the school year is winding down, many of our committee chairs are still hard at work planning and executing great things for our community. Trailwood parents are a huge part of what makes Trailwood amazing and you are so appreciated! Thanks for everything you do! Heather McClure, PTA president hmcclure1436@gmail.com

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17th is 3rd GRADE BIKE SAFETY DAY!! Please plan to have your 3rd grader ride or bring his/her bike to school this day for our annual bike safety day. Leawood police officer, Mark Chudik, will be providing bike safety instruction including a hands-on portion on the playground. Watch your email for more information! We need parent volunteers!! There are 70+ students in the 3rd grade. Find the sign-up genius link here. Our school auction was an amazing success! PTA made $55,000. Thank you to the auction committee for their hard work and to all the families that contributed! Because of the auction success, it is possible for the PTA to purchase and install mature shade trees for our Trailwood playground. This would provide our students and teachers much needed relief from the sun and cool the playground temperatures. At the April 9th PTA meeting the PTA members will vote on the purchase of trees. A quorum of at least 15 members is required so please attend the meeting! The meeting starts at 8:15 AM and the vote will be the first item on the agenda. The trees will be approximately 20-25 feet tall which is the largest that can reasonably be transplanted. The species will be elm and/or swamp white oak. The drawing shows approximate locations of four trees. We will vote on a 2 tree option and a 4 tree option. The cost to supply and install each tree is $1200/tree. We hope the trees can be planted in the coming weeks! When is the best time to plant a tree? Twenty years ago. When is the second best time to plant a tree? Today! If you have questions about the trees, please contact: Robert Whitman kcdesoto1@hotmail.com 913.908.6941 Kindergarten Round-Up is right around the corner so please make sure you have confirmed with our secretary Shereen North that your child is on her roster. Thanks a lot!! Shereen North Trailwood Elementary Secretary 913-993-5600 Fax 913-993-5699 twnorth@smsd.org 2019 Trailwood Kindergarten Round-up AmbassadorHelp us be an amazing ambassador to Trailwood and volunteer at Kindergarten Round-up on Wednesday, April 17th from 5:45-7:45 p.m.! We need 2 volunteers to help at the check-in table and we'll also need 6 volunteers to help in the 3 Kindergarten classrooms by making these future Thunderbirds feel right at home. Thank you so much for your consideration, Victoria Savich and Jamie Reasons We still do not have a school funding plan from the state legislature. The Senate passed a reasonable education plan to keep in place the current funding formula and provide the necessary inflation funding for our schools. The House barely passed its own education plan, which contains policy provisions opposed by PTA including eliminating a commitment to fund special education and limits on instruction for English Language Learners. A Conference Committee has been appointed to negotiate the final details between House and Senate. The good news is that Trailwood's four legislators have supported the PTA position every step of the way so far. Please thank them! In the News: Save the Date and plan to arrive at school early on your bikes Wednesday, May 8th!!! The 'Let's Move' committee will again sponsor Bike to School Day. We will also be having our 'Move in May' challenge starting Friday, May 3rd-Thursday, May 7th. Watch your email for more details!! Save the date for Papa John's Night, April 16th. Take care of dinner and donate to Trailwood at the same time! With so many unplanned days off this winter and some changes to the way Chat and Chew would happen, it was hard to get the program up and running this year. Please look for a fresh start with Chat in Chew next school year. Attention Trailwood Kindergarten - 3rd Grade Families! We are thrilled to host a special event with local children's book author Alastair Heim on Monday, May 6th at 9:00am in the Trailwood Commons! I have been working with Alastair over the course of this school year getting his delightful books into the hands of elementary school kids in and around Kansas City. Alastair has written four children's picture books and he is kind enough to do a free story time and book signing with our Kindergarten-3rd graders! All four of Alastair's books will be available to pre-order through The Learning Tree (yay for supporting a local author AND a local business!) and he will sign and personalize each book at the event. What a wonderful keepsake for your child and a great gift for all of those upcoming birthday parties! A link to the order form is below, but you will also receive a paper copy that will come home with your child in the upcoming weeks. Please turn in order forms to Shereen in the front office and all orders must be received by April 15th to ensure enough books are ordered from the publisher. I am so excited to bring Alastair to Trailwood! I hope you will consider ordering his books to take home to enjoy with your families! If you have any questions, I can be reached at kristina@the-learning-tree.com Thanks so much, Kristina Keairns ![]()
Come join us as we celebrate the Picasso in our Pre-schoolers! Also, If you don't see a future thunderbirds name/email on our guest list...please let me know and be sure to invite them to RSVP! -Mrs.Victoria Savich and Mrs. Lindsey Guillen FYI...Just a friendly heads up that we do play and explore lots of items and materials that can be a possible chocking hazard for children younger than 3. Plus, we also do lots of MESSY, open ended play that works on social and emotional skills. Please dress your child accordingly.
