This time of year is always a little bittersweet—on one hand, I’m ready for the end of the school year because a break is much needed! But on the other hand, it’s the passing of another year and the kids are another year older!
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our PTA activities this year. Your willingness to give your time, energy and support is what makes Trailwood such a great place to be! To celebrate the end of the year, please plan to join us for the last PTA meeting of the year on May 7 at 8:15 as well as the Spring Brunch immediately following the meeting (see invitation below for details). We will honor Lifetime PTA Honorees and swear in the new Exec Board members for next year.
Congratulations to the 2019-2020 Trailwood PTA Exec Board Members!

With this beautiful spring weather, it’s a great time to keep out sidewalks packed with bikers and walkers. To keep our crossing guard on 95th and Roe for next year, we need lots of kiddos walking/biking to and from school each day!
Please join us on Wednesday, May 8th for National Bike to School Day.
Please join us for two more Walking Fridays! Here are the upcoming dates:
Friday, May 10th

Staff Appreciation Week (May 6th – 10th) will be here before we know it! We have a lot of fun things planned but we need your help. Please check out the schedule below to see where you can help. You don’t need to do everything so pick your favorite things and show your love and support. Let’s show our Trailwood Staff how much we LOVE them!
Monday, May 6th: Something Pretty
Bring a flower from the PTA Flower sale, store or from your garden
Tuesday, May 7th: Something from Sonic:
Sonic day for Teachers and Staff! Sonic will be providing favorite beverages for our Staff. Thank you Sonic for your support! We still need two volunteers to be “school hops” to deliver the drinks in the afternoon. If you are available and interested, please reach out to Julie at firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
Wednesday, May 8th: Something Sweet
Ideas: Candy bar, homemade treat, soda, piece of fruit, popcorn, gum/mints, etc. We also encourage you to bring a “sweet” thank you note from home.
Thursday, May 9th: Something She’ll Love
Ideas: Nail Polish, pens, a hand drawn picture, candle, lotion, gift card, supplies for the next school year, etc.
Friday, May 10th :
Everyone deserves a break on this day. The PTA will be showering our staff with cookies. “Thank you for helping our kiddos to be such smart cookies this year!”

Calling all golfers! The 2nd Annual Trailwood Elementary Golf Tournament will be held on Thursday, May 16th at Deer Creek Golf Club. Please see the attached flyer for additional information. Please come join us one last time as we say,"Good-bye!" to the school year and say,"Hello!" to summer break with a fun summer theme...outside (hopefully) in the sun!!! We will do lots of fun, MESSY and even EXPLOSIVE activities outside and enjoy a sweet, cold treat! PLEASE, dress your child in clothes they can get messy in! We will also have a VERY special certificate to give to our FUTURE KINDERGARTNERS that will start in August 2018!
PLEASE message me your CHILD'S FIRST and LAST NAME if they will be attending Trailwood in the 2019-2020 school year ASAP!
-Mrs.Victoria Savich and Mrs. Lindsey Guillen
FYI...Just a friendly heads up that we do play and explore lots of items and materials that can be a possible chocking hazard for children younger than 3. Plus, we also do lots of MESSY, open ended play that works on social and emotional skills. Please dress your child accordingly.
At the April PTA meeting, the general membership approved the purchase of 2 elm trees to help shade the playground! Thanks to the generous support of our parents we had sufficient operating capital from the auction to fund such a fantastic purchase. The District is expecting to have the trees planted soon and both trees will be located at the south edges of the playground. In addition, Joan Leavens from the District will be attending our May 7 PTA meeting to discuss grounds questions.
We would love for you to consider joining one of the following committees to make the 2019-2020 school year the best yet! Please let Jen Pontier know if you have interest or questions about the following openings:
-Welcome Back Coffee
-Family Science Night
-Room Parent Coordinator
Thank you for your consideration!
School Funding Plan Passes
After much delay, the Kansas legislature passed a school funding bill, which was signed by Governor Laura Kelly. The bill adds new funding to account for inflation and when combined with the funding that was approved last year, SMSD is expected to receive an additional $9.8 million. The state supreme court must still rule on whether the new funding plan is constitutional. All our Trailwood area legislators voted in favor of the bill - please thank them!
This is an election year for SMSD. Our South-area seat and one At-Large seat are both on the ballot this year. Our current South-area representative, Deb Zila, is not running again. Brian Brown is the only individual who has announced for that seat; Brad Stratton has filed for re-election to the at-large seat. Additional candidates can file until June 1.
