This time of year is always a little bittersweet—on one hand, I’m ready for the end of the school year because a break is much needed! But on the other hand, it’s the passing of another year and the kids are another year older! Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our PTA activities this year. Your willingness to give your time, energy and support is what makes Trailwood such a great place to be! To celebrate the end of the year, please plan to join us for the last PTA meeting of the year on May 7 at 8:15 as well as the Spring Brunch immediately following the meeting (see invitation below for details). We will honor Lifetime PTA Honorees and swear in the new Exec Board members for next year. Congratulations to the 2019-2020 Trailwood PTA Exec Board Members! Plus, we also do lots of MESSY, open ended play that works on social and emotional skills. Please dress your child accordingly. ![]() At the April PTA meeting, the general membership approved the purchase of 2 elm trees to help shade the playground! Thanks to the generous support of our parents we had sufficient operating capital from the auction to fund such a fantastic purchase. The District is expecting to have the trees planted soon and both trees will be located at the south edges of the playground. In addition, Joan Leavens from the District will be attending our May 7 PTA meeting to discuss grounds questions. We would love for you to consider joining one of the following committees to make the 2019-2020 school year the best yet! Please let Jen Pontier know if you have interest or questions about the following openings: -Welcome Back Coffee -Kindergarten Coffee -Family Science Night -Room Parent Coordinator -Skating Parties Thank you for your consideration! jennipontier@gmail.com ![]() School Funding Plan Passes After much delay, the Kansas legislature passed a school funding bill, which was signed by Governor Laura Kelly. The bill adds new funding to account for inflation and when combined with the funding that was approved last year, SMSD is expected to receive an additional $9.8 million. The state supreme court must still rule on whether the new funding plan is constitutional. All our Trailwood area legislators voted in favor of the bill - please thank them! ![]() Election Year This is an election year for SMSD. Our South-area seat and one At-Large seat are both on the ballot this year. Our current South-area representative, Deb Zila, is not running again. Brian Brown is the only individual who has announced for that seat; Brad Stratton has filed for re-election to the at-large seat. Additional candidates can file until June 1.
