We will have the back-to-school coffee for parents set up on the first day of school right outside the band room. Come meet up with friends you haven't seen since summer break and get to know new parents as well. Everyone is welcome! Parents! Harness all the back to school energy you have right now and register for the T-Bird Trot TODAY! The FIRST day of school is the LAST day to register and get your t-shirt. So don’t delay! Click here to sign up online: If registration presents a financial burden for your family, please use the code TROT19 at check out. This is a 100% discount and will remain confidential. We want everyone to be able to participate! Whew, now that registration is behind us, what’s up with the Trot in 2019 anyway? It’s early this year: Friday, August 23rd. Plan to arrive around 5:30 pm. The race starts at 6 pm, with dinner and a DJ-fueled dance party to follow! Bring water—it will probably be hot—and consider walking or biking to the event, since parking will be limited. And don’t stress if you’re not a marathoner in your spare time. This is a fun, relaxed walk or run through the neighborhood and is only about two miles in length. Please leave dogs and bikes at home, but feel free to push littles in strollers or wagons. The logo this year was designed by Trailwood parent Julie Severns (Lillian and Jake’s mom). Tell her what a great job she did when you see her! Finally, did you know that the T-Bird Trot is actually a fundraiser for the Trailwood library?! What?! It’s true. For several years running, the event has pulled in enough money to make a $1,000 gift to the library for books and other curriculum materials. Consider making a donation this year! You can do so by clinking on the registration link above. Are you new to the Trot? Or maybe it’s just been a loooooong summer? No problem! Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions:
![]() School Funding Ruled Constitutional Kansas public schools are finally constitutionally funded, according to the Kansas Supreme Court. This spring lawmakers voted to add $90 million in funding for public schools to account for inflation and the Supreme Court ruled that is enough to consider our schools adequately funded. Shawnee Mission schools are expected to receive $9.8 million in new funding added recently. Thank you to all four of our Trailwood area legislators - Rep. Stephanie Clayton, Rep. Jan Kessinger, Sen. Barbara Bollier and Sen. John Skubal - for supporting the increase in funding. Every Year Is An Election Year Did you know that every year is an election year? In odd-numbered years we always have local government officials to elect, including members of our Shawnee Mission Board of Education. This year, most Trailwood families will vote for two positions. All Shawnee Mission families will vote for the at-large position currently held by Brad Stratton, who is running unopposed. Those families living in the South Area will vote for to replace Deb Zila, who is retiring. There are two candidates running: Brian Brown, a parent at Brookridge Elementary and Indian Woods Middle School, and Jessica Hembree, a parent at Trailwood. PTA does not endorse candidates but encourages everyone to register to vote and to vote with PTA priorities in mind by Oct. 15 and to vote on Nov. 5. News Links
