Thanks to the Let’s Move Committee: Jessica Hembree, Liz Kruger and Deborah Mower, we had a fantastic National Walk to School Day. What a fun way to start the day! There’s plenty more opportunities this month to gather together for some fun. Kidfest at Shawnee Mission South, PTA movie night and of course the Halloween Parade are all coming up. Make sure you scroll through the whole newsletter to catch all the important events coming up. Please note that our next General PTA meeting is an evening meeting. Have you updated your family’s information in our new online directory yet? Purchased a yearbook for the 2019-2020 school year? Paid your PTA dues? All of those things can be done easily through our new directory provider, Membership Toolkit! Simply follow the steps below:
Don't forget to download the free Membership Toolkit App! Visit the App Store or Google Play Store and search for Membership Toolkit. Download the App, and then log in with the same username and password you used online. You can then control what notifications you receive and how you receive them within the App. Questions? Contact Cara at caraelizabeth1@yahoo.com. Did you know that every year is an election year? This year, most Trailwood families will vote for two positions on our Board of Education. All Shawnee Mission families will vote for the at-large position currently held by Brad Stratton, who is running unopposed. Those families living in the South Area will vote for a new member, choosing between Brian Brown and Jessica Hembree. PTA does not endorse candidates but encourages everyone to register to vote and to vote with PTA priorities in mind on Nov. 5. Candidate Forum: Saturday, October 5 If you missed Tuesday's SMAC PTA forum for Board of Education candidate's, don't despair. You can watch video of the event here and the Shawnee Mission Post will host another forum on Saturday, October 5 from 9:00-10:15 a.m. at the Central Resource Library (9875 W 87th St). Look for Facebook Live streaming on the Shawnee Mission Post page. Vote By Mail Who needs one more errand to squeeze in between school drop off, pickup, work, clubs and the rest of life? Not parents! We encourage you to vote by mail if you might not make it to the polls on election day. Fill out your mail ballot request at www.ksvotes.org and your ballot will arrive at your home in mid-October. Do your research, fill it out, stamp it and send it in! Take Action: Prevent Gun Violence National PTA is committed to federal efforts to protect children and families from gun violence and believes the Senate must enact legislation that will help prevent future tragedies while preserving the lawful use of firearms for sport and personal protection. See the PTA position bit.ly/2lMojGs and tell your Senators to address gun violence through universal back checks today! bit.ly/2ksXsyU Hello Trailwood, Our annual Flu Clinic is on October 28th from 7:30 to 8:45. The Box Tops for Education program is going digital! You may have already seen new packaging directing you to BTFE.com. Just follow the link to get the app, which will allow you to easily scan receipts of any products with the new Box Tops. There are still plenty of products around with the old Box Tops, and we will get credit for sending those in as well. Drop off physical Box Tops in the office now, or any time by Oct. 18. Please make sure they have not expired. If you have a lot of them, bundling or bagging them in labeled sets of 50 would be helpful There will be another collection period in February. Our goal is to raise $1000 this year, between the Box Tops that we collect at school and those that are scanned! If you have questions, please email Kellie Harvey, kelliesharvey@gmail.com What an amazing turnout we had for Pastries with Parents! We hope you all enjoyed your morning with your kiddos and your school community. A HUGE thank you to the Copeland Family for donating the delicious coffee from Hattie’s Fine Coffee and Sprouts for their muffins donation! ![]() The Trailwood Let's Move committee wants you to get out and enjoy the cooler weather that is forecasted to be coming our way. PLAN TO WALK OR RIDE YOUR BIKE TO/FROM SCHOOL ON FRIDAYS THIS FALL! Research shows that exercise, like walking/biking to school, helps children arrive more alert for class, reduces stress and increases creativity - all of which help a child's peformance at school. Remember, we have a crossing guard at 95th Street and Roe! At least 15 students a day must use the crosswalk to keep the program viable, so please spread the word, grab your friends and head out to walk/bike as often as you can. Please remind your children to use the crosswalks and to observe all traffic signals. Walking in a group with adult supervision is always safest for younger children. The SM South Varsity cheerleaders will be holding our annual K-8 Cheer Clinic on Friday, October 18th and would love to have your daughters, granddaughters, friends, and neighbors join us! The clinic will be from 4-6PM followed by pizza, and then we’ll head out to the football field where the clinic girls will cheer with Varsity for the first half of the game.
