The 3rd Annual Trailwood Elementary Golf Tournament has been rescheduled for Thursday, October 1st, at Deer Creek Golf Club! We would love to have you join us! You may sign up as a player or as a sponsor throughout the spring and summer. We are looking forward to a fun day on the course this fall to raise money for a brand new traverse rock climbing wall for the gym! Questions? Please contact Vivian at vivian@outlookcreative.com or Cara at caraelizabeth1@yahoo.com. Hello Thunderbirds! I hope this month’s newsletter finds you well and adjusted to the new normal. I know this has been a challenging time for us all. I am so proud of our community and the teachers and staff at Trailwood. I believe everyone has handled a truly unprecedented end to the school year to the best of their abilities. I will do my best to answer some lingering questions below. However, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions! Do we still receive yearbooks for the 2019-2020 school year? YES! Yearbooks are already laid out for the year and you can still order one through Membership Toolkit up until May 15th. We will distribute them this summer or as soon as we are cleared to hold a distribution day. Please see the step by step directions on how to order below. I bought a ticket at auction to a grade level party or event. Will these events still take place? YES! All events will still be held…just at at later date! We are hopeful that most events can take place over the summer. Hosts will keep you informed on new dates! Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up. Can we still celebrate our teachers? YES! We would love to celebrate our amazing teachers now more than ever! Teacher Appreciation week is May 4th-8th. We would encourage Room Parents to send “E-gift cards” as a gift from the class if funds have already been collected. You are also welcome to utilize Venmo, etc. to collect from your class if you haven’t already. Some E-gift card ideas that can be easily purchased, emailed and used in our current condition are: Amazon, Target, Grubhub, Ubereats and Papa John’s. I would also encourage sending letters or videos to teachers with messages of thanks and appreciation! Take Care Thunderbirds! Jen Pontier PTA President Jennipontier@gmail.com We are in a unique position this year with our budget. With such an abrupt end to the school year, we have funds that were allocated to events that will now go unused for the year. We have an opportunity to put that portion of the budget for the 2019-2020 school year to good use. The Trailwood Executive Board would like to propose a $2,875.00 donation to the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation Care Fund. The Care Fund gives direct assistance to families in need within our school district. This is the amount that we would have typically spent on the following events:
We will need to take a General PTA vote to make this donation. If you’d like to vote, please join our virtual meeting to take a vote on Monday, April 13th at 7:00pm via Zoom. Meeting ID: 867 632 4998 Password: 5YE19N As everyone is hopefully settling into this new normal, I thought it would be a good time to send out an update. Although the Kansas legislature is currently not in session, there are still some important things to address. Below you will find information on the 2020 Census, the Presidential Primary, and a Legislative Issues Follow-up. 2020 CENSUS – 10 minutes of your time impacts 10 years of funding If just 1% of the Kansas population goes uncounted, the state could miss out on receiving $603,990,400 in federal funding. Every uncounted person costs the state approximately $2082. To date, only 50% of the households within the SMSD district have filled out their census.
PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY – being done by mail-in ballot only There is no republican primary this year and due to COVID-19, the Kansas Democratic Party has made a big change to their May 2 primary. All voting will be done via mail-in ballot; there will be no in-person voting. If you plan to vote in the primary, below are important dates and helpful information:
LEGISLATIVE ISSUES FOLLOW-UP This year we’ve been following bills opposed by the Shawnee Mission School District, KS PTA, and education advocates, such as the voucher type bills that divert public tax dollars to private schools, and bills they supported, such as at-risk high density funding and Medicaid Expansion. Due to COVID-19, these bills were set aside as the legislature focused on passing the budget. There was good news within the budget, as it includes a 2 year extension on the at-risk high density sunset. Had this not been included, SMSD would have lost $1 million in funding. Ideally, at-risk high density funding would be a permanent piece of the school funding formula. There will likely be legislators that re-introduce a bill to remove the sunset in two years. The legislature is currently scheduled to return on April 27, so it’s possible some of these bills could come to the forefront again, but it is currently up in the air if the legislature will actually return on that date or not. One last reminder…fill out your census! And take a moment to check in with 5 friends to encourage them to fill it out too. Erin Woods SMAC PTA Legislative Coordinator |
