December 3, 2021

Happy December, Trailwood families! It's so hard to believe we are nearly halfway through the school year.

This month is filled with some wonderful ways to give back. Please take a look at the latest T-Birds Serve collection for Care Beyond the Boulevard as well as a donation collection for our amazing non-classroom teachers and staff.

We are fortunate to have Dr. Tyrone Bates, coordinator of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for SMSD, join us for the next general PTA meeting. I hope you can attend what will be a very informational meeting.

I hope you all have a safe, healthy, and happy winter break!

Go Thunderbirds!

T-Birds Serve: Hygiene Kit Drive, Dec. 1-15 Benefiting Care Beyond the Boulevard

Join T-Birds Serve as we continue to help others during these COVID times and give back during the holidays!  We'll be collecting hygiene kits during the month of December for Care Beyond the Boulevard, an organization that ensures that Kansas City homeless, uninsured, or otherwise vulnerable members of society have access to quality medical and mental health care despite adverse financial or social circumstances.

WHAT TO DO
This is a great way to engage your kids to think about others during the holidays by taking them to the store (or ordering online together) to create your hygiene kit. Travel size products are preferred. Please pack your hygiene kit in a gallon ziplock bag and deliver it back to Trailwood by Wednesday, Dec. 15. There will be a blue bin in front of the office.

Hygiene kits can consist of the following items:

  • water bottles
  • high protein snacks
  • hand warmers
  • hats
  • socks
  • toothpaste
  • toothbrush
  • shampoo
  • conditioner
  • body soap
  • flashlight
  • any other smaller items that your student can think of

Care Beyond the Boulevard will utilize the hygiene kits each and every day they provide care to the homeless or uninsured in Kansas City. These bags will ride along in their mobile medical unit and go directly to camps and people who can't make it to other resources. Hygiene kits are so critical for CBB to have because they start as a beginning to connecting new faces to what we do.

About T-Birds Serve

T-Birds Serve hopes to create a community of compassionate children through engagement and involvement in humanitarian service projects related to aiding, clothing and feeding those in need.  We want to help children understand the importance of giving to others and we hope that they will continue to give as adults.  If you have any questions or want to get involved with T-Birds Serve, please contact Karen Badgett at 913-269-9342 or kabadgett@gmail.com.

Teacher Appreciation Lunch

It will be the last Red Friday of the Chiefs regular season, so we thought it would be fun to celebrate it with a “tailgate” inspired luncheon for the teachers.  The date is Friday, January 7 and donations can be dropped off in the office the morning of the 7th.  If you would like to help with the lunch by providing something, then please sign up below.  Many thanks in advance for helping out-

Yearbook

We're changing things up this year!

  • Adding pages and a get to know your staff section for paras, admin, etc.
  • Reaching out to teachers to either design their own page for classroom memories or will give the option for committee to creat a collage of photos they provide
  • Considering half page layouts for specials
  • Will add a spotlight page for all awards, recognition, etc for TW students, teachers and parents
  • 6th grade committee will be asked to provide a 1 or 2 page layout for their year recap
  • Adding a PTA page to highlight achievements from pta events and fundraising
  • Considering adding a poll and wordsearch consisting of words provided by students
  • Looking at adding a message from the principal for the back

If anyone has time to help, the Yearbook Committee could use help with all the new implementations!

We'd love your fun photos from the first day, school events, extracurricular activities and more! If possible, please title the uploads with specific information (grade, name, activity, event, etc). Thank you!

To thank our amazing teachers and staff, the PTA treated them to a yummy lunch from Corner Bakery Cafe last month! We appreciate the many ways they impact our kids everyday. We also were able to send all of the teachers and staff home with a pie for Thanksgiving! Thank you to all of our wonderful parents for contributing.
