I hope you will be able to join us this coming Tuesday for the March PTA meeting with special guest speaker Dr. Tyrone Bates, SMSD Coordinator of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Legislative Update

Thanks to all who attended our Feb. PTA meeting, featuring local SMSD and Kansas State Board of Education representatives. Great information about district issues, as well as the funding and policy issues in the state legislature that have a major impact on our district and schools.  The first half of the Kansas legislative session is over, and several bills related to public education are still in play. The most concerning of these are bills that:

  • Divert public tax dollars to public schools. For every 1% of Kansas students who participate in proposed Education Savings Accounts, $22.5 million in public funds would be lost.
  • Create an administrative burden on our teachers, who are already stretched thin, taking their time away from educating students.
  • Remove $50 million in at-risk funding from schools with a larger number of at-risk kids who need more interventions and services.
  • Allow teachers to skip required curriculum if it goes against their religious or other beliefs (ex. some students learn about evolution while others do not)

For more details, see the SMAC PTA legislative update here. Watch the TW PTA and SMAC PTA Facebook pages for time sensitive Action Alerts on these bills as they move through the legislative process.

If you missed our postcard campaign, it's not too late to participate individually. Write or make your own postcards, or send an email to your representative/senator  (instructions with talking points here). This is an EASY way to let your state legislators know that, as parents, we support our teachers, a focus on learning recovering, and full funding for our public schools.  Contact Emily with any questions at emsebelius@gmail.com

Contact Lo Hathaway at lauren.hathaway3@gmail.com with questions!

Kindergarten Round-Up is on Wednesday, April 13th from 6:00-7:30.  Kindergarten enrollment is currently taking place and we will be sending out a sign-up genius to our kindergarten parents to sign up for 20 minute sessions on that evening to meet the teachers, principal, nurse, PTA members and JCPRD.  Any questions please contact Shereen!

Trailwood Elementary Golf Tournament

Plans for the 4th annual golf tournament are underway! Be on the look-out in the coming week for your chance to purchase both tournament registrations and sponsorships. This event is open to all Trailwood supporters, so please invite your friends, neighbors, and co-workers!

We are currently looking for volunteers to help us plan this event over the next few months. If interested, please contact Cara Peterson at caraelizabeth1@yahoo.com. We'd love for you to join us!

PTA Flower Sale

Coming soon... PTA Flower Sale!  Online ordering will be available soon and the flowers will arrive on April 29, just in time for Teacher Appreciation Week, Mother's Day and your own spring planting!

Update Your Directory Information

Did you know that you could be missing out on making connections with other Trailwood families if your directory information isn't current? If you haven't yet logged into your account this year, now is the perfect time to do it! It only takes a few minutes. Not sure how to access your account? Just click on the link below for step-by-step instructions. Thank you for helping to keep our directory up-to-date! Please contact Lori Tritsch at nurseholcomb@hotmail.com with any questions.

It’s not too late to purchase a PTA membership, yearbook, or activity fee! Becoming a member doesn’t obligate you to attend meetings or volunteer; you can be as involved as you’d like!  Memberships range from $10 - $20 and help us to provide support to the students, families, teachers and staff of Trailwood Elementary.
